Description
The recent tragic events in Japan have served to graphically illustrate the vulnerability of modern supply chains. Indeed, the disruption in the supply of automotive components has been felt worldwide, bringing assembly lines that are continents apart to a halt, and the closure of numerous sites around Tokyo has pushed up the price of components and chips used in the electronics sector as manufacturers seek new sources of supply. These problems are not isolated incidents; only last year air traffic was severely disrupted by volcanic ash over Europe and unusually heavy snowfalls hampered transport in late autumn. Although it is tempting to regard these occurrences as 'Blue Moon' events, the fact that supply chains have extended to distant locations in search of lower manufacturing costs has resulted in a significant increase in the risk of supply disruption, a risk that is exacerbated by techniques such as just-in-time inventory management, outsourcing and lean supply chain philosophies. Understanding supply chain risk is now critical to the success of every enterprise operating in a global market. The varied forms in which these risks manifest themselves and the way in which they increase in line with supply chain complexity means that risk assessment and mitigation must be planned with a high degree of skill. The costs that a lack of adequate planning can incur may extend well beyond the cost of remedial action and could include loss of sales, negative publicity, a devalued brand image, loss of market share and eroded shareholder value.
